WHY PLANTS?

Plants have been used in skin and body care for thousands of years, forming an important part of herbal traditions across cultures.

What began through observation and experience can now be understood with far greater precision through modern science.Plants contain an extraordinary range of compounds relevant to cosmetic formulation, including antioxidants, essential fatty acids, phytosterols, polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins and other bioactive constituents. Many are studied for their role in supporting the skin barrier, conditioning the skin, helping defend against oxidative stress and maintaining healthy-looking skin.

What makes plants particularly valuable is their complexity. Rather than containing one isolated “active”, a plant can contain a broad spectrum of compounds with different properties relevant to skin.

For OÉSARI, plants are not an alternative to skincare science. Science is what allows us to better understand what plants contain and formulate with them more intentionally.

SELECTED FOR SKIN

We do not choose plants because they are fashionable, exotic or simply because they are natural.

We begin with what we want a formula to achieve cosmetically, then select plants with relevant research, known composition and a meaningful role within the complete formula. We consider the plant part used, the preparation method, the available evidence and the contribution each plant can make to the final formulation.

A plant earns its place for what it contributes to the skin and the formula, not for how impressive its name looks on an ingredient list.

THE POWER OF PLANTS TOGETHER

There is no single miracle plant.

Different plants contain different combinations of compounds. One may be particularly rich in antioxidants, another in fatty acids or phytosterols, while another may contribute soothing or protective constituents. Many contribute across several areas at once.

Bringing complementary plants together allows us to work with a broader spectrum of plant chemistry than relying on one plant or one isolated “hero” ingredient.

Skin is equally complex. Its barrier, lipid balance, moisture, comfort, response to environmental stress and visible appearance are interconnected.

The purpose is not to use as many plants as possible. It is to choose plants whose different strengths make sense together.

WHOLE-PLANT COMPLEXITY

Modern skincare often identifies a desirable compound, isolates or concentrates it and builds a formulation around that single active. There is value in concentrated actives, but there can also be value in retaining more of a plant’s natural complexity.

Whole-plant preparations can contain numerous naturally occurring constituents rather than reducing a plant to one isolated compound. This allows us to work with a broader spectrum of the plant’s naturally occurring constituents.

That does not mean every part of every plant is beneficial, or that whole is automatically better. It means that when a whole-plant preparation is appropriate, its complexity can be part of its value.

PLANT PART AND EXTRACTION

Not every part of a plant is the same.

A seed, flower, leaf, fruit or root can have a distinctly different composition. Choosing the right plant therefore also means choosing the appropriate plant part.

Preparation matters too. Different extraction methods capture different compounds. Some are suited to oils, others to water or other extraction media, while CO₂ extraction can provide concentrated fractions of selected plant constituents.

There is no single extraction method that is right for every plant or every formula.

OÉSARI uses the preparation and extraction method appropriate to the plant, the constituents of interest and the cosmetic formula being created.

TRADITION, UNDERSTOOD THROUGH SCIENCE

Herbal traditions gave us generations of knowledge about plants long before their chemistry could be analysed in a laboratory. Modern research has since identified and studied many of the compounds behind plants historically valued in skin and body care.

That does not mean every traditional use is scientifically proven. It means inherited plant knowledge and modern science can inform one another without being treated as opposites.

Today, we can understand more about what plants contain, which constituents have demonstrated cosmetic relevance, how they can be extracted and how they can be incorporated into sophisticated formulations.

FORMULATED FOR MODERN SKIN

OÉSARI brings these worlds together.

Whole-plant preparations provide breadth. Plant oils contribute valuable lipid profiles. Concentrated extracts allow selected fractions to be used at defined levels. Vitamins, bioactive lipids and other modern functional ingredients are incorporated where they add value to the finished formula.

We do not use plants simply because they are natural, and we do not believe a formula becomes better simply by containing more of them.

We use plants because their chemical diversity gives us a broad palette of constituents with studied cosmetic relevance.

The knowledge is ancient.
The understanding is modern.
The formulation brings the two together.
